New report reveals speeding accounts for 90% of West Yorkshire driving offences

New figures have revealed that speeding accounted for nine in 10 driving offences in West Yorkshire throughout last year.

The county saw over 181,000 speeding offences registered throughout the past year, the highest amount recorded throughout England and Wales.

Analysis of Home Office data by transport research charity RAC Foundation shows that motorists were caught driving too fast over 181,867 times by West Yorkshire Police in 2018/19, meaning 90% of the 201,548 motoring offences recorded over the period were for speeding.

Speaking on the figures, Steve Gooding of the RAC Foundation said: “The simple rule for drivers who don’t want to risk ending up with a speeding ticket is not to break the limit in the first place.

“Where limits are properly signposted, and clearly feel right for the road in question, then motorists have no excuse for going faster.”

The number of speeding offences detected in West Yorkshire in 2018/19 was 4% higher than during the previous year, and 77% more than in 2011/12.

A breakdown of the statistics shows that 41% of speeding offences this year, were dealt with by sending the driver on a speed awareness course.

26% of people caught speeding were hit with a fine, while 19% of offences were cancelled and 15% were sent to court.
