Final Leeds Brown Bin Collections Before Winter ‘Hi-Bin-ation’

Leeds’ garden waste collections will pause for winter as the final round of brown bin pick-ups begins from 17 November.

Final collections begin next week

Leeds residents are being reminded that the final round of brown bin garden waste collections for 2025 begins on Monday 17 November, before the annual winter break. The last scheduled collections will take place up to Saturday 29 November.

Leeds City Council runs the largest garden waste collection service in the UK, collecting over 31,000 tonnes of garden waste each year from 220,000 households. The service supports residents with gardens and complements the council’s push for more home composting.

Why brown bin collections pause

The annual winter pause is introduced because demand for garden waste disposal drops sharply during the colder months. Collections will resume in spring.

Residents can still dispose of garden waste for free at any of the council’s eight household waste recycling centres, all open seven days a week, 8am–4pm.

All garden waste collected is composted locally and reused in farming, horticulture and land restoration projects. The council also encourages home composting as the most environmentally friendly option.

Checking final collection dates

Residents who receive brown bin collections can check their final collection date by using the Leeds Bins app or the council’s online bin-day checker.

Fallen leaves and seasonal garden material can also be composted at home to create mulch and soil conditioner.

Council statement

Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s Executive Member for Climate, Energy, Environment and Green Space, said:

“With winter approaching we close down the brown bin collections, so it is important for everyone who gets a garden waste collection to put their bin out for the final time if it needs emptying over the next two weeks.

If any residents have garden waste while the service is on its winter break, it can be taken to any of our household waste recycling centres and disposed of easily there for free.”
