M61 Northbound Closure Between Horwich and Chorley

Drivers in Greater Manchester are being advised the northbound M61 is currently closed between junction 6 at Horwich and junction 8 at Chorley following a serious incident earlier today (Friday 2 September)

The carriageway was closed at about 11.45am after a vehicle left the carriageway north of Rivington services. Emergency services are still at the scene assessing the incident. The carriageway is likely to remain closed for several hours and drivers are being urged to avoid the area if possible.

A signed diversion is in place from junction 6 with drivers advised to follow the ‘solid black triangle’ symbol – using the westbound A6027 to access the northbound A6 to Chorley and then the eastbound A674 Millennium Way to rejoin the M61 at junction 8.

Highways England traffic officers are working to manage traffic and help free drivers stuck behind the incident. Meanwhile, colleagues at the North West Regional Control Centre at Newton-le-Willows and at the National Traffic Operations Centre at Quinton near Birmingham, have set electronic message signs across the local, regional and national motorway network to advise drivers of the closure.

Drivers are advised to avoid the M61 until the road has re-opened by taking an alternative route or delaying journeys. Drivers should check travel conditions before setting out on journeys. Highways England provides live traffic information via its website www.trafficengland.com, local and national radio travel bulletins, electronic road signs and mobile apps. Information is also available from Twitter via @highwaysNWEST as well as services in other regions.
