The Labour MP for Halifax, Holly Lynch, shared her thoughts with us following the Prime Minister’s decision for an early election on the 8 June.
Asked whether this is a good time to be calling a General Election, Ms Lynch was somewhat critical. She said: “I am very surprised that [Theresa May] has called for a GE, having already triggered Article 50. The PM says that this is about Brexit, but we are now into the negotiations. I would not have anticipated that the Prime Minister would have taken us into a general election where the country doesn't have a functioning Government for up to 4 weeks.”
The Halifax MP believes the motives behind calling the snap election are questionable, adding: “I believe that this is about political opportunism, rather than what is in the best interests of the country. Of course people have different political positions on key issues. That is the nature of an elected democracy. Theresa May is seeking a bigger majority of support from within her own party on Brexit.”
