IPCC To Investigate West Yorkshire Police Following Death Of David Ellam

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) will conduct an investigation following the death of a man who was attacked by a dog in Huddersfield.

David Ellam, 52, died in hospital following the incident in Sheepridge on Monday, 15 August 2016.

West Yorkshire Police referred the matter to the IPCC as the force had contact with the owner of the animal, and the dog had been subject to testing following concerns that it may have been a dangerous breed before being returned to the owner, prior to Mr Ellam’s death.

IPCC Commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “The death of Mr Ellam was a tragic incident and my sympathies go to his family.

“Our independent investigation will look closely at police actions prior to Mr Ellam’s death, including the decision-making around the removal, testing and return of the dog.

“A criminal investigation into Mr Ellam’s death is being carried out by West Yorkshire Police.”
