    Bradford Council For Mosques Welcomes Sadiq Khan's Victory

    Council for Mosques Bradford has welcomed the election victory of London’s new Mayor Sadiq Khan, in a statement issued to the press this morning

    “Sadiq Khan’s success is a victory for equality, diversity and democracy. His humble working class roots should inspire many from the Muslim community to seriously engage with the democratic processes of our society. We have seen a widening of active participation of Muslims in the recent local elections, not only in Bradford but across the country. This is a powerful indicator of the growing political maturity of British Muslims.”

     

    The statement this morning also talked of the election tactics of Mr Khan’s main opposition rival Zac Goldsmith which has come under fire even from some in his own party. Council for Mosques Bradford refers to this element of the campaigning when they said “We ask the government to stop using race and religion to create fear within our communities, as was seen in the mayoral election campaigning in London. This kind of approach will only alienate communities further and is not at all helpful.”

     

    They add “Bradford is one of the fastest growing cities in the country yet continues to suffer limited employment opportunities. The youth – which is dominated by Muslims in inner city areas, remain economically marginalised, which ultimately leaves them vulnerable. In the words of Sadiq Khan “we don’t just tolerate differences, we respect them”. Here in the north we must rise to the challenge and accept this mantra.”
