Premier League 2019/20 Game Week 13 Roundup

A full roundup of game week 13 of the Premier League, including the team of the week.

West Ham United 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur

Following the shock dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino after five years with the club – and the shock appointment of former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho – Spurs picked up their first away win in the league since January. Goals from Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane made it look as though the visitors would be in for an easy ride, although they were unable to strike again and suffered a late-match scare thanks to goals from Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna. In the end though, Spurs managed to cling on to their lead and walk away with all three points.

Arsenal 2-2 Southampton

It wasn’t a good evening for Arsenal as a struggling Southampton side made them sweat on their way to a draw. Goals from Danny Ings and James Ward-Prowse gave the Saints the lead, but each time they struck, Alexandre Lacazette was on hand to pull things back for the Gunners, with the Frenchman grabbing his second and levelling the scores in the 96th minute.

Brighton and Hove Albion 0-2 Leicester City

The Seagulls made an impressive Leicester side work for their win at the weekend, with the hosts managing to shut out the free-scoring side until the second half. Ayoze Perez notched his fourth league goal of the season to give the Foxes the lead before a penalty from Jamie Vardy sealed the result.

Watford 0-3 Burnley

Watford sank back to the foot of the table following a strong performance from Sean Dyche’s men. The score remained tied until the second half, before a volleyed effort from Chris Wood handed Burnley the lead. Ashley Barnes was close to having his penalty saved, although his effort snuck in off the post, before James Tarkowski added a third and handed the Clarets their first win away from Turf Moor all season.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Liverpool

Liverpool were once again made to sweat in their endeavour to maintain their healthy lead at the top of the table, although they were able to snatch a win and continue their long unbeaten streak in the league. James Tomkins controversially had a goal disallowed in the first half after Dejan Lovren was fouled, before Sadio Mane properly broke the deadlock early in the second half. Palace fought back and equalised through Wilfried Zaha, although the game didn’t remain level for long, with Roberto Firmino ending his six-game goal drought in the league to snatch all three points for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Bournemouth 1-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

After a relatively slow start to the season, Wolves were able to climb back to the European qualifying spots thanks to an important win over Bournemouth on the South Coast. Things went from bad to worse for the Cherries in the first half after they found themselves two goals down after strikes from Joao Moutinho and Raul Jimenez as well as reduced to ten men after Simon Francis was shown a red card. Steve Cook pulled one back for the hists in the second half, but it wasn’t enough and Wolves walked away with all three points.

Everton 0-2 Norwich City

The shock of the weekend came as Everton suffered defeat at the hands of a struggling Norwich City side, whose last league win came in mid-September against Manchester City. Todd Cantwell opened the scoring for the Canaries in the second half, before Dennis Srbeny sealed the win in the second minute of added time, with Everton boss Marco Silva now tipped to be the next Premier League boss to get the sack.

Manchester City 2-1 Chelsea

In the arguably the biggest game of the weekend, the Etihad Stadium hosted a clash of the Premier League titans as an in-form Chelsea side were looking to deal Pep Guardiola’s men their second successive defeat. The Blues started the stronger of the two sides, with N’Golo Kante opening the scoring for the visitors. However, their lead didn’t last long with Kevin de Bruyne equalising eight minutes later and Riyad Mahrez giving the reigning champions the lead with a sublime solo effort. The game remained 2-1 and City were able to overtake Chelsea and climb to third in the league.

Sheffield United 3-3 Manchester United

League new boys Sheffield United denied Manchester United the chance to climb above them in the league table on Sunday, maintaining their surprising run of form and extended their unbeaten run in the league to six games. John Fleck gave the Blades the lead in the first half, before Lys Mousset doubled the host’s advantage. The Red Devils came back though with a flurry of goals from a troika of academy graduates. Brandon Williams, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford all struck within seven minutes to shift the game in their favour. However, a late goal from Oli McBurnie denied Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men all three points.

Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle United

Steve Bruce returned to Villa Park on Monday night, with his Newcastle side looking to keep the Villains within touching distance of the relegation zone. It wasn’t to be however as two quickfire goals from Conor Hourihane and Anwar El Ghazi proved decisive, and Dean Smith’s men saw off the Magpies and ensured they left with no points to show for their efforts.
