Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray beat British number one Edmund 7-6 (7-4) 1-6 6-4.
It is the latest step in Murray’s comeback from hip surgery, which has seen him struggle to regain form – leading to him pulling out from appearing at Wimbledon thi.
He will play Romania's Marius Copil in the third round.
