Three elderly people die from fires within twenty-four hours

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) is conducting investigations after three elderly people died in separate fires within 24 hours.

The causes of the fires, which happened on Friday and Saturday (5-6 January), are all believed to be accidental.

WYFRS said the fires are not connected, however the casualties were all over the age of 70-years-old and all lived alone.

Two incidents took place in Huddersfield and the other in Hebden Bridge.

The incidents

  • On Friday, January 4, fire crews were called to a house fire on Akroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge at 12.20 hrs. Crews from Todmorden, Halifax and Keighley fire stations attended. This was a fire involving a two storey building. It started in the lounge area of the domestic property and also affected the room above. One male, who was in his 70s, was found dead at the property.
  • On Friday, January 4, fire crews were called to a bungalow in Deighton Road, Deighton, Huddersfield at 17.02 hrs to a kitchen fire. Crews from Rastrick, Huddersfield and Dewsbury attended the incident and assisted paramedics in delivering first aid. A female in her 80s suffered burns in the fire and was taken to hospital but sadly later died.
  • On Saturday, January 5, fire crews were called at 11.48 hrs to Skipton Avenue, Fartown, Huddersfield to a fire which started in a bedroom. On arrival crews rescued a female in her 80s from the property. Crews delivered first aid before handing the female into the care of the Ambulance crews.  The casualty was taken to hospital but sadly later died. Crews from Huddersfield and Rastrick attended.
