Respected Mosque Worker Involved In Counterfeit Currency Scam

A 26 year old Bradford man has been spared an immediate custodial sentence after he was involved in passing off fake Indian rupees in exchange for hundreds of pounds.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Aamir Sohail, of Lumb Lane, who is a teacher at a local mosque, exchanged hundreds of thousands of fake rupees for over £1,700 sterling at the Keighley branch of the pawnbrokers Ramsdens Financial Limited

Sohail, the court was told, had also tried to exchange more fake rupees at the firm’s Bradford branch.

Then on a third occasion Sohail successfully exchanged fake rupees for about £80 at the Travelex branch at Leeds Bradford International Airport.

Sohail admitted offences of passing counterfeit currency and tendering counterfeit currency and was sentenced to 12 months in jail suspended for a year.

He was also ordered to do 300 hours unpaid work for the community and pay £1,767 compensation to Ramsdens.
