Residents outraged after plans to build housing estate on floodplain deemed "worth the risk"

A housing estate will be built on a floodplain in Mirfield after planners said it was “worth the risk”.

The land, off Granny Lane, was allocated for housing as part of the council’s controversial Local Plan, with Wakefield-based Miller Homes due to develop the site.

Speaking on the decision, Councillor Carole Pattison said: “We are strapped for housing. The houses are protected. I think it’s worth the risk and I think that’s what the developer has decided.”

Subsequently, the Granny Lane Area Action Group, comprised of residents who opposed the development, were left angered by the decision.

Cheryl Tyler, from neighbouring organisation Save Mirfield, that supported the group, said: “Apart from the fact that an officer’s report was produced before the end of the consultation period - that left just two working days to read and digest anything the public may have submitted during the consultation - this is a failure of process, smacking of pre-determination.
