An eccentric Leeds landmark has won the prestigious title of England’s Tree of the Year.

Nellie’s Tree, at Aberford, was formed almost 100 years ago by Vic Stead. He grafted the beech tree into the shape of an ‘n’ in order to woo a woman named Nellie.

The Woodland Trust, who issued the accolade, said it was a move that worked as Vic and Nellie went on to marry.
