EU meeting to decide on coordinated response to refugee crisis

This week, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is calling on the public to make sure elected representatives in the European Parliament pass a historic piece of legislation that will help vulnerable refugees resettle in Europe.

The committee says that without adequate legal routes to Europe, many face the choice of undertaking dangerous journeys or staying in camps and temporary accommodation.

Leaders from the European Parliament, Council and Commission – the three big institutions that make up the EU – are meeting to discuss how a European-wide resettlement scheme could give vulnerable refugees safety on the continent.

Last year, an unprecedented 22.5 million people around the world have been forced to flee, unable to return to their homes and in many cases spending years in limbo. IRC says refugee resettlement allows the most vulnerable people a safe and supported journey to a new country they can call home.
