Covid-19 lockdown easing delayed by four weeks

The government has announced today (14 June) that most COVID-19 rules will remain in place in England for another four weeks.

This postpones the planned easing of restrictions which had been pencilled in for 21 June.

Ministers have made this decision due to concerns about increased infections of the new Delta Variant which was first discovered in India.

The government believes the delay will allow millions more people to be vaccinated and give scientists more time to monitor the new variant.

Bradford District health professionals share concerns around the new variant and the potential impact it could have if re-opening took place on 21 June.

Health chiefs are welcoming the news that from tomorrow 23 to 24-year-olds in England will be offered a COVID-19 vaccination and by 19 July the target is to give every adult their first jab.

Sarah Muckle, Bradford Council’s Director of Public Health, said:

“It's very clear that infection rates are rising as a result of new variants of the virus. There are things that everyone in our community can do to help limit the spread of the virus.

“Getting vaccinated is key, so it is good news that from tomorrow 23 to 24 year olds will be offered a vaccine. We’re encouraging anyone who gets the offer of a vaccination to take it. If you have been offered one before and have said no, you can change your mind and book one. We’re also asking that people get tested regularly and follow the guidance of hands, face, space, fresh air.”

Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council, said:

“This is clearly disappointing news for those businesses who were planning to open and for people planning events and holidays. But we know infection rates are rising quickly so we have to support the government’s decision. We all want to stop people becoming infected and prevent further restrictions and another lockdown.

“We ask that everyone remains vigilant and follow the guidance so that we will see easing of restrictions again in four weeks’ time. We know vaccinations make a huge difference, so if you are offered one, please take it. It will help protect you and also will protect our community.”
