A bus driver with gambling debts of £20,000 stole almost £2,000 of takings from his employer First Bus.
Amar Aslam, of Rafborn Grove in Salendine Nook pleaded guilty to theft charges. He was present at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court and confessed to taking home the takings instead of cashing it in. Aslam, a First Bus employee for 3 and a half years then used the money to pay off a loan shark – and called in sick before quitting.
The company noticed a discrepancy between the number of tickets sold by Aslam and the amount of cash he deposited into the machine.
Prosecutor Jill Seddon said: “He was suspected of stealing the money but denied it and said he had receipts to prove it but then went off sick and later resigned. No action could be taken by the company and the matter was reported to the police.”
His solicitor Leveene Hill argued that Mr Aslam had a gambling addiction and had amassed a £20,000 debt. He was forced to take desperate measures to pay back his debts, he also borrowed money from a loan shark and when he couldn’t pay this back he received threats. Aslam was backed into a corner”
Magistrates ordered a probation report ahead of Aslam’s sentencing on December 12th adding that all sentencing options remained open.
